1:1 — In the name of GOD, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.*

Introduction

Greetings. Peace be upon you.

The statement “The Messenger is the Quran, the Quran is the living Messenger” may sound like a very strong claim when first heard. If its limits are not drawn carefully, there is a danger of attributing to the verses a meaning they do not state. For that reason, I want to make clear from the beginning what I mean. I am not saying that the Quran is a biological being who breathes like a human being and possesses an independent will. I use the word “living” in the sense that the message continues to perform a messenger function. The warning still warns today, the good news still gives hope today, the guidance still points the way today, and revelation still calls the human being to make decisions about his own life today.

A human messenger is born, lives, speaks, and dies. His body is bound to time. But the truth of the message sent down to him does not depend on the bodily presence of the human messenger. When the messenger is no longer among us, GOD’s message does not lose its validity. On the contrary, understanding the task of the human messenger correctly requires preserving the distinction between the message and the person. The messenger is sent not to establish a religion of his own, but to convey what his Lord revealed to him. His value comes not from stepping in front of the message, but from carrying it faithfully.

At this point I ask myself: When the human messenger is no longer among us, where does the warning he carried continue to be heard? Where does the messenger function that calls people from darkness into light continue? Is obedience tied only to the physical presence of a person who lived in the past, or does it gain meaning by turning toward the revelation he clearly recited? The Quran’s description as a bearer of good news, a warner, a guide, and a message that reaches all people makes these questions difficult to ignore.

In this reflection, the phrase “The Messenger is the Quran” will not be used to erase the identity of the human messenger. The human messenger is a real messenger who receives, recites, and conveys revelation. Yet at the center of the office of messengership is not his personal thought, but GOD’s message. Nor does the phrase “The Quran is the living Messenger” mean sanctifying the book’s cover or paper. What is living is the address of the message that still speaks to the human being today. A person standing before the Quran does not merely read events that happened in the past; he also tests his own faith, justice, truthfulness, submission, and whom he accepts as ultimate authority.

Summary:

1. The Revealed Message and the Messenger Who Recites the Revelations

65:10

GOD has prepared for them severe retribution. Therefore, you shall reverence GOD, O you who possess intelligence and believed. GOD has sent down to you a message −*

GOD has prepared for them severe retribution. Therefore, you shall reverence GOD, O you who possess intelligence and believed. GOD has sent down to you a message −*

65:11 — a messenger* who clearly recites GOD's revelations to you in order to lead those who believe and work righteousness out of darkness into light. Whoever believes in GOD and leads a righteous life, He will admit into gardens with flowing streams; they abide therein forever. GOD will generously reward such a person.

2. Messengership Is Not Personal Authority, but a Trust of the Sent Word

69:40 — This is the utterance of an honorable messenger.

69:41 — Not the utterance of a poet; rarely do you believe.

69:42 — Nor the utterance of a soothsayer; rarely do you take heed.

69:43 — A revelation from the Lord of the universe.

81:19 — This is the utterance of an honorable messenger.*

81:20 — Authorized by the Possessor of the Throne, fully supported.

81:21 — He is to be obeyed and trusted.

81:27 — This is a message for all the people.

3. The Human Messenger Dies; Faith Cannot Be Tied to a Human Lifespan

3:144 — Muhammad was no more than a messenger like the messengers before him. Should he die or get killed, would you turn back on your heels? Whoever turns back on his heels does not hurt GOD in the least. GOD rewards those who are appreciative.

21:34 — We never decreed immortality for anyone before you; if you must die, are they immortal?

39:30 — You (Muhammad) will surely die, just as they will die.

46:9 — Say, “I am no different from other messengers. I have no idea what will happen to me or to you. I only follow what is revealed to me. I am no more than a profound warner.”

4. The Messenger's Sole Duty: To Deliver the Message Completely

5:67 — O messenger, deliver what is revealed to you from your Lord—until you do, you have not delivered His message—and GOD will protect you from the people. GOD does not guide the disbelieving people.

5:99 — The messenger's sole duty is to deliver the message, and GOD knows everything you declare and everything you conceal.

13:40 — Whether We show you what We have promised them, or terminate your life before that, your sole mission is to deliver (the message). We are the ones who will call them to account.

16:82 — If they still turn away, then your sole mission is the clear delivery (of the message).

42:48 — If they turn away, We did not send you as their guardian. Your sole mission is to deliver the message. When We shower the human being with mercy, he rejoices, but when hardship touches them as a consequence of their own deeds, the human being turns disbelieving.

5. Obeying the Messenger Is Not Submitting to a Person Independent of the Message

24:54 — Say, “Obey GOD and obey the messenger.” If they refuse, then he is responsible for his obligations and you are responsible for your obligations. If you obey him, you will be guided. The messenger's sole duty is to deliver (the message).

5:99 — The messenger's sole duty is to deliver the message, and GOD knows everything you declare and everything you conceal.

46:9 — Say, “I am no different from other messengers. I have no idea what will happen to me or to you. I only follow what is revealed to me. I am no more than a profound warner.”

6. Scripture as Bearer of Good News, Warner, and Guide

41:3 — A scripture whose verses provide all the details, in an Arabic Quran, for people who know.

41:4 — A bearer of good news, as well as a warner. Yet most of them turn away; they do not hear.

17:9 — This Quran guides to the best path, and brings good news to the believers who lead a righteous life that they have deserved a great recompense.

18:1 — Praise GOD, who revealed this scripture to His servant and made it flawless.

18:2 — A perfect (scripture), to warn about severe retribution from Him, and to bring good news to the believers who lead a righteous life that they have earned a generous reward.

50:45 — We are fully aware of everything they say, though you have no power over them. Therefore, remind with this Quran those who reverence My warnings.

7. A Message That Preaches to the Living and Reaches Everyone

36:69 — What We taught him (the messenger) was not poetry, nor was he (a poet). This is no more than a formidable proof* and a profound Quran.

36:70 — To preach to those who are alive, and to expose the disbelievers.

68:52 — In fact, it is a message to the world.

81:27 — This is a message for all the people.

43:44 — This is a message for you and your people; all of you will be questioned.

8. The Preserved Message and the Enduring Source

6:115 — The words of your Lord are complete, in truth and justice.* Nothing can abrogate His words. He is the Hearer, the Omniscient.

10:37 — This Quran could not possibly be authored by other than GOD. It confirms all previous messages and provides a fully detailed scripture. It is infallible; for it comes from the Lord of the universe.

15:9 — Absolutely, We have revealed the reminder, and absolutely, We will preserve it.*

18:27 — You shall recite what is revealed to you of your Lord's scripture. Nothing can abrogate His words, and you will not find any other source beside it.

41:41 — Those who rejected the Quran's proof* when it came to them also rejected an Honorable book.

75:18 — Once We recite it, you shall follow such a Quran.

75:19 — Then it is We who will explain it.

9. The Greatest Testimony, Tawhid, and the Danger of Taking Human Beings as Lords

6:19 — Say, “Whose testimony is the greatest?” Say, “GOD's. He is the witness between me and you that this Quran* has been inspired to me, to preach it to you and to whomever it reaches. Indeed, you bear witness that there are other gods* beside GOD.” Say, “I do not testify as you do; there is only one god, and I disown your idolatry.”

6:51 — And preach with this (Quran) to those who reverence being summoned before their Lord, that they may attain salvation—they have none beside Him as a Lord and Master, nor an intercessor.

7:3 — You shall all follow what is revealed to you from your Lord; do not follow any idols beside Him. Rarely do you take heed.

18:110 — Say, “I am no more than a human being like you, inspired that your god is one god. Those who hope to meet their Lord shall work righteousness, and never worship any other god beside their Lord.”

45:6 — These are GOD's revelations that We recite to you truthfully. In which Hadith other than GOD and His revelations do they believe?

10. The Moral Fruit of the Message: Knowledge, Justice, Righteous Life, and Submission

17:9 — This Quran guides to the best path, and brings good news to the believers who lead a righteous life that they have deserved a great recompense.

39:41 — We revealed the scripture through you for the people, truthfully. Then, whoever is guided is guided for his own good, and whoever goes astray goes astray to his own detriment. You are not their advocate.

65:11 — a messenger* who clearly recites GOD’s revelations to you in order to lead those who believe and work righteousness out of darkness into light. Whoever believes in GOD and leads a righteous life, He will admit into gardens with flowing streams; they abide therein forever. GOD will generously reward such a person.

Reflection on the Verse

The end of 65:10 carries the thought into the next verse: “GOD has sent down to you a message −*” Then 65:11 continues with the expression “a messenger.” The message that is sent down and the messenger who clearly recites GOD’s revelations are connected within the same flow of the sentence. This proximity opens the first door to the central idea of the title.

The duty explicitly set out by the verse is to recite the revelations. The messenger does not present his own thoughts as GOD’s word; he clearly recites GOD’s revelations. This distinction is not small. Messengership is not a position of personal superiority, but the responsibility of carrying the message that has been sent. What gives value to the messenger’s words is not his personal charisma or social power, but the source of the revelation he recites.

The phrase “living Messenger” gains meaning for me here. The Quran does not live like a human body; but when the verse is recited, the address is renewed. The call “O you who possess intelligence” does not remain merely a voice belonging to a community in the past. The person standing before the verse is also called to think. The need to move from darkness into light did not belong only to the first recipients. Every generation encounters the same message within its own darkness.

2. Messengership Is Not Personal Authority, but a Trust of the Sent Word

Verse

69:40 — This is the utterance of an honorable messenger.

69:41 — Not the utterance of a poet; rarely do you believe.

69:42 — Nor the utterance of a soothsayer; rarely do you take heed.

69:43 — A revelation from the Lord of the universe.

81:19 — This is the utterance of an honorable messenger.*

81:20 — Authorized by the Possessor of the Throne, fully supported.

81:21 — He is to be obeyed and trusted.

81:27 — This is a message for all the people.

Reflection on the Verse

If the expression “This is the utterance of an honorable messenger” is isolated, one might think the utterance is an independent production belonging to the messenger. But the sequence of verses does not leave that possibility open. It is not the utterance of a poet or a soothsayer; it is “a revelation from the Lord of the universe.” An inseparable connection is established between the utterance of the honorable messenger and revelation from GOD.

This connection does not diminish the messenger’s value. On the contrary, it places the honor of messengership in the correct place. The messenger is honorable not because he sanctifies his own speech, but because he carries the revelation entrusted to him. If he places his own personality at the center of the message, he cannot remain faithful to the task of messengership. The messenger is not a veil standing in front of the message, but a carrier serving its clear hearing.

These verses make me think that the office of messengership stands directly against personal fame. A poet’s words may rest on his own art, and a soothsayer’s words on his own claim. The messenger’s words, however, are messenger speech precisely to the extent that they are not his own. He identifies the source and does not place himself in the source’s position. This attitude carries a demanding ethic for everyone who speaks about religion: no matter how impressive a person may sound, he cannot make GOD say what GOD did not say.

3. The Human Messenger Dies; Faith Cannot Be Tied to a Human Lifespan

Verse

3:144 — Muhammad was no more than a messenger like the messengers before him. Should he die or get killed, would you turn back on your heels? Whoever turns back on his heels does not hurt GOD in the least. GOD rewards those who are appreciative.

21:34 — We never decreed immortality for anyone before you; if you must die, are they immortal?

39:30 — You (Muhammad) will surely die, just as they will die.

46:9 — Say, “I am no different from other messengers. I have no idea what will happen to me or to you. I only follow what is revealed to me. I am no more than a profound warner.”

Reflection on the Verse

3:144 exposes how easily a person’s religious commitment can become dependent on a person. The possibility that Muhammad might die or be killed is mentioned together with the possibility of the believers turning back on their heels. This shows that the bodily presence of the human messenger can become a test for faith. The one who stood beside the messenger while he was alive discovers, when the messenger dies, what he was truly attached to.

The verse’s question is severe: “Would you turn back on your heels?” The death of the human messenger is not the death of truth. If the value of the message declines when the messenger’s body is gone, the attachment may have been built upon the person rather than GOD. Loving the messenger, honoring his struggle, and believing in the revelation he brought is one thing; tying faith to his mortal body is another.

46:9 shows this humanity from another direction. The messenger does not present himself as a being different from other messengers. He claims no independent knowledge of the future concerning himself or his audience. By saying “I only follow what is revealed to me,” he states his limit. This sentence ties the essence of messengership back to the message. If even the messenger is a follower of revelation, how can a person who is not a messenger turn his own opinion into unquestionable religious authority?

4. The Messenger’s Sole Duty: To Deliver the Message Completely

Verse

5:67 — O messenger, deliver what is revealed to you from your Lord—until you do, you have not delivered His message—and GOD will protect you from the people. GOD does not guide the disbelieving people.

5:99 — The messenger’s sole duty is to deliver the message, and GOD knows everything you declare and everything you conceal.

Reflection on the Verse

These verses repeatedly bring the messenger’s task back to the same center: delivery. The repetition itself matters. Human beings can easily turn the messenger from the person who delivers the message into an authority who manages people’s destinies, rules their consciences, or independently produces laws in GOD’s name. The verses keep the task clear.

5:67 says, “deliver what is revealed to you from your Lord.” The source of what is to be delivered is clear. The messenger does not fulfill his task by adding his own thought into the message. Nor does he fulfill it by hiding part of the revelation. Delivering the whole message is the messenger’s responsibility. The weight here makes me think that messengership is a trust before it is a title of honor.

When I carry this distinction into my own life, I question how I speak when explaining religion to someone else. Showing the verse and presenting my own conclusion as though it were the verse are not the same thing. There is a great difference in responsibility between saying “This is how I understand it” and “GOD certainly says this.” If even the messenger’s task is limited to conveying revelation, placing my interpretation in the place of revelation may be a far more serious transgression of boundaries.

5. Obeying the Messenger Is Not Submitting to a Person Independent of the Message

Verse

24:54 — Say, “Obey GOD and obey the messenger.” If they refuse, then he is responsible for his obligations and you are responsible for your obligations. If you obey him, you will be guided. The messenger’s sole duty is to deliver (the message).

5:99 — The messenger’s sole duty is to deliver the message, and GOD knows everything you declare and everything you conceal.

46:9 — Say, “I am no different from other messengers. I have no idea what will happen to me or to you. I only follow what is revealed to me. I am no more than a profound warner.”

Reflection on the Verse

Obedience to the messenger is one of the most sensitive points in the relationship between person and message. 24:54 states obedience both to GOD and to the messenger; at the end of the same verse, it repeats that the messenger’s sole duty is to deliver the message. This structure makes it difficult to read obedience to the messenger as personal submission independent of the message.

The messenger is not a religious center separate from GOD. He himself follows revelation. The statement in 46:9, “I only follow what is revealed to me,” makes this clear. Obeying the messenger means responding to the call of a messenger who follows revelation. There is a message that the messenger cannot independently alter, add to, or detach from its source.

In 24:54, responsibilities are separated. The messenger is responsible for his obligations and the recipients for theirs. This shows that obedience does not erase a person’s personal account. A person cannot transfer responsibility by saying “I merely followed a leader.” If even obedience to the messenger does not release a person from the duty to think, believe, and lead a righteous life, how could attachment to any later person erase one’s account?

6. Scripture as Bearer of Good News, Warner, and Guide

Verse

Reflection on the Verse

In 41:3-4, scripture is described as a “bearer of good news” and a “warner.” These two qualities are functions often associated with messengers. Their placement here directly in relation to scripture provides a strong basis for thinking about the Quran’s messenger function. Scripture does not merely store information; it carries hope and warning concerning the human future.

In 18:1-2, the flawless and perfect nature of scripture is mentioned together with its functions of warning and bringing good news. Flawlessness is not a quality that can be transferred to human interpretation. Scripture may be flawless while the understanding of the person who reads it remains limited. Preserving this distinction is basic to the ethics of knowledge. Someone who regards his own interpretation as flawless can place himself in the position of the verse while claiming fidelity to it.

Yet the expression “living address” does not permit a person to load any meaning he wishes into the text. On the contrary, it requires greater fidelity to the verse’s words. If the message still speaks today, my duty is not to dress it in my own voice, but to listen carefully to what it says. Thinking of the Quran as a living Messenger is not freely altering the text; it is taking seriously revelation’s unchanged call as it reaches the human being.

7. A Message That Preaches to the Living and Reaches Everyone

Verse

36:69 — What We taught him (the messenger) was not poetry, nor was he (a poet). This is no more than a formidable proof* and a profound Quran.

36:70 — To preach to those who are alive, and to expose the disbelievers.

68:52 — In fact, it is a message to the world.

81:27 — This is a message for all the people.

43:44 — This is a message for you and your people; all of you will be questioned.

Reflection on the Verse

The expression in 36:70, “to preach to those who are alive,” adds another depth to the title “The Quran is the living Messenger.” The Quran addresses the living. Its recipient is the living human being. The message does not come to become an archival document after a person’s death, but to warn the person while he lives.

Being alive may not mean only breathing biologically; however, I do not want to move beyond the verse and manufacture a definitive spiritual definition. What is clear is that preaching reaches a living recipient. The person is called while he can still choose, turn toward righteousness, and change his life. The urgency of the message lies here.

Preaching to the living calls the human being not to postpone. Saying that one will think about truth only in the future can push the message outside the present. Yet the Quran addresses the living person today. The decision for a righteous life is made today, justice is observed today, and the test of not taking human beings as lords is lived today.

8. The Preserved Message and the Enduring Source

Verse

6:115 — The words of your Lord are complete, in truth and justice.* Nothing can abrogate His words. He is the Hearer, the Omniscient.

10:37 — This Quran could not possibly be authored by other than GOD. It confirms all previous messages and provides a fully detailed scripture. It is infallible; for it comes from the Lord of the universe.

15:9 — Absolutely, We have revealed the reminder, and absolutely, We will preserve it.*

18:27 — You shall recite what is revealed to you of your Lord’s scripture. Nothing can abrogate His words, and you will not find any other source beside it.

41:41 — Those who rejected the Quran’s proof* when it came to them also rejected an Honorable book.

41:42 — No falsehood can enter it, in the past or in the future;* a revelation from a Most Wise, Praiseworthy One.

75:17 — It is We who will collect it into Quran.

75:18 — Once We recite it, you shall follow such a Quran.

75:19 — Then it is We who will explain it.

Reflection on the Verse

The human messenger’s lifespan is limited. The preservation of the message, however, is tied to GOD. This distinction is fundamental to understanding the continuation of the Quran’s messenger function. If the existence of revelation depended only on a human being’s memory, political power, or institution, the death of the human messenger would make the future of the message uncertain. 15:9 places responsibility for preservation directly with GOD.

This preservation does not mean that human beings have no responsibility. People can read the message, convey it, and live according to it. But the final guarantee of the message is not human. This thought gives both trust and humility. It gives trust because the future of revelation has not been abandoned to human weakness. It gives humility because no person can say, “The Quran stands because of me.”

This thought also limits religious authority. If revelation is preserved, human interpretations that are not preserved must be continually verified. A scholar, teacher, or researcher may help to understand a verse; but the truth of his words does not come from his title. They have value to the extent that they accord with revelation. Trusting the Quran’s living messenger function means being able to stand before the message without sanctifying human interpretation.

9. The Greatest Testimony, Tawhid, and the Danger of Taking Human Beings as Lords

Verse

6:19 — Say, “Whose testimony is the greatest?” Say, “GOD’s.

45:6 — These are GOD’s revelations that We recite to you truthfully. In which Hadith other than GOD and His revelations do they believe?

Reflection on the Verse

The question “Whose testimony is the greatest?” is a question about which word life will be built upon. A person encounters many testimonies. Family, society, religious teachers, traditions, political powers, and one’s own desires may all say different things. The verse’s answer establishes a single measure above all those voices: “GOD’s.”

6:51 states that there is no Lord and Master beside GOD. This requires that the danger of taking human beings as lords not be limited to visible idols. When we turn a person into an unquestionable owner of our thoughts, conscience, and religious decisions, we may give him a place the verse has not granted.

Listening to a religious leader or scholar is not in itself taking a person as a lord. A person learns knowledge, asks questions, and benefits from the work of others. The danger begins when that person’s words become beyond verification. The sentence “If he said it, it must be true” ties the source of knowledge to a person’s title. Over time, the verse is read through the person rather than the person being measured through the verse.

10. The Moral Fruit of the Message: Knowledge, Justice, Righteous Life, and Submission

Verse

65:11 — a messenger* who clearly recites GOD’s revelations to you in order to lead those who believe and work righteousness out of darkness into light. Whoever believes in GOD and leads a righteous life, He will admit into gardens with flowing streams; they abide therein forever. GOD will generously reward such a person.

6:115 — The words of your Lord are complete, in truth and justice.* Nothing can abrogate His words. He is the Hearer, the Omniscient.

Reflection on the Verse

It would be incomplete to reduce the Quran’s messenger function to a debate about authority alone. The aim of the message is not merely to bring the human being to the “correct opinion,” but to direct him toward a righteous life. In 65:11, belief and working righteousness are mentioned together. In 17:9, good news is given to believers who lead a righteous life. If knowledge has no moral fruit, the purpose of the message may not have found its full response.

39:41 states that guidance is for a person’s own good, while going astray is to his own detriment. It also adds that the messenger is not their advocate. This once again makes responsibility personal. Another person cannot lead a righteous life on my behalf. Belonging to a leader’s community does not automatically transfer the result of guidance to me.

Moving from darkness into light is not an instant sense of superiority. Throughout life, a person notices his own darknesses. Sometimes dependence on people, sometimes fear of losing advantage, sometimes injustice, and sometimes pride in knowledge covers one’s direction. The message remains alive by repeatedly calling the human being to come out of these darknesses.

11. On the Arabic Roots of the Words

Verse

65:10 — GOD has prepared for them severe retribution. Therefore, you shall reverence GOD, O you who possess intelligence and believed. GOD has sent down to you a message −*

Root information does not replace the verse and does not alter Rashad Khalifa’s Authorized Translation. A word’s root field can be used not to produce an alternative verse to the translation, but to think more carefully about relationships within the verse. If this boundary is not preserved, root study can become a tool that forces the text toward a meaning the reader wants instead of explaining it.

The word رَسُولًا (rasulan) is related to the root ر-س-ل (Ra-Sin-Lam) and carries the field of meaning associated with sending. A messenger is not a person who authorizes himself. The quality of having been sent shows the messenger’s dependence on the source. This is one linguistic sign that the messenger is not an independent religious center: he carries what has been sent.

Thinking about the roots also limits the expression in the title. When I say “The Messenger is the Quran,” I mean the messenger function of having been sent; when I say “The Quran is the living Messenger,” I mean the continuation of the message’s function of reminding and bringing people into light. The field opened by the words may not permit a more definite ontological claim beyond this.

12. Other Claims

Verse

65:10 — GOD has prepared for them severe retribution. Therefore, you shall reverence GOD, O you who possess intelligence and believed. GOD has sent down to you a message −*

3:144 — Muhammad was no more than a messenger like the messengers before him. Should he die or get killed, would you turn back on your heels? Whoever turns back on his heels does not hurt GOD in the least. GOD rewards those who are appreciative.

41:4 — A bearer of good news, as well as a warner. Yet most of them turn away; they do not hear.

Reflection on the Verse

Different approaches can be put forward regarding the expression “a messenger” in 65:11. A significant portion of traditional and historical readings understand this expression as a human messenger. This approach emphasizes the messenger “reciting” GOD’s revelations and speaking directly to the first recipients. There is no explicit basis for saying that the verse excludes the human messenger.

Another claim may be that emphasizing the Quran’s messenger function diminishes the exemplary role or value of human messengers. Yet the purpose of this article is not to devalue the human messenger. On the contrary, it argues for recognizing the human messenger through his own task: he receives revelation, follows it, recites it clearly, and delivers it. Understanding the messenger together with the message rather than placing the messenger ahead of the message may be more faithful to his mission.

The safest boundary among differing claims is the common ground explicitly established by the verses: the human messenger is mortal; the messenger’s duty is to deliver the message; the messenger’s utterance is revelation from the Lord of the universe; scripture brings good news, warns, and guides to the best path; and GOD preserves the message. The reflection in the title should not move beyond this common ground.

13. Conclusion

Verse

81:27 — This is a message for all the people.

43:44 — This is a message for you and your people; all of you will be questioned.

39:41 — We revealed the scripture through you for the people, truthfully. Then, whoever is guided is guided for his own good, and whoever goes astray goes astray to his own detriment. You are not their advocate.

17:9 — This Quran guides to the best path, and brings good news to the believers who lead a righteous life that they have deserved a great recompense.

Reflection on the Verse

The Quran is a message for all people. This statement removes it from being merely the memory of a community that lived in the past. The message still reaches the human being today, confronts him with the reality that he will be questioned, and leaves the responsibility of choice on his own shoulders.

The human messenger receives and delivers the message. He is not an independent source placed in front of revelation. He carries not his own word, but revelation from the Lord of the universe. The messenger’s honor therefore cannot be separated from the message. Obedience to the messenger likewise gains meaning not as submission to a personal authority independent of GOD, but as responding to the guidance he carries.

For me, the conclusion of this reflection is this: the human messenger may no longer be among us, but the message he faithfully carried is before us. The warning still warns today. The good news still gives hope today. The guidance still shows the best path today. The message still questions the human being’s life and allegiances today.

2:32 — They said, “Be You glorified. We have no knowledge except that which You have taught us. You are the Omniscient, Most Wise.”

31:27 — If all the trees on earth were made into pens, and the ocean supplied the ink, augmented by seven more oceans, GOD’s words would not run out. GOD is Almighty, Most Wise.

GOD knows best.
