What Did You Send Ahead for Tomorrow? How Does a Human Being Build the Future Today?

The central purpose of this article is to contemplate the verses together with other related verses, and to consider sincerely and deeply what bearing witness to the oneness of GOD means in human life in terms of knowledge, justice, truthfulness, and submission.

Peace. Peace be upon you.

“What have you sent ahead for tomorrow?” may first sound like a question about planning. But the “tomorrow” of 59:18 opens into a larger horizon of account. The verse asks every soul to examine what it has sent ahead and immediately reminds us that GOD is fully Cognizant of everything we do.

That language forces me to think about the future not through wishes, but through present action. Other verses describe deeds being recorded, a person reading his own record, small and great acts being presented, and even an atom’s weight of good or evil becoming visible.

The question of this article is: Is the future merely something that will happen to us, or are we already sending something ahead into tomorrow through what we do today?

Summary:

1. “Let Every Soul Examine What It Has Sent Ahead for Tomorrow”

59:18

18. The Unknown Tomorrow: The Boundary Between Preparation and Ownership

31:34 — With GOD is the knowledge regarding the Hour (end of the world).* He is the One who sends down the rain, and He knows the contents of the womb. No soul knows what will happen to it tomorrow, and no one knows in which land he or she will die. GOD is Omniscient, Cognizant.

19. Arabic Word Roots: Soul, Tomorrow, and Sending Ahead

59:18 — O you who believe, you shall reverence GOD, and let every soul examine what it has sent ahead for tomorrow. You shall reverence GOD; GOD is fully Cognizant of everything you do.

Reflection on the Verse

59:18 turns the gaze toward the self before it turns toward the future. Before “What will happen tomorrow?” comes the question “What have you sent ahead for tomorrow?”

Equally important is the command to examine. A person is called to review his own life.

What did I say today? Whom did I harm? Which right did I return? What information did I verify? What good did I postpone? These questions can become a daily form of reflection.

Verse references: 59:18.

2. Forgetting GOD, Forgetting Oneself

Verse

59:19 — Do not be like those who forgot GOD, so He made them forget themselves. These are the wicked.

Reflection on the Verse

59:19 says that those who forgot GOD were made to forget themselves. Coming immediately after 59:18, the warning is deeply meaningful.

A person can plan money, status, and security for the future while forgetting the future of the self itself. Outwardly prepared for tomorrow, inwardly empty for “tomorrow.”

Remembering oneself here is not selfish inwardness. It is refusing to forget one’s responsibility and return before GOD.

Verse references: 59:19.

3. Good Is Something Sent Ahead

Verse

2:110 — You shall observe the Contact Prayers (Salat) and give the obligatory charity (Zakat). Any good you send forth on behalf of your souls, you will find it at GOD. GOD is seer of everything you do.

Reflection on the Verse

2:110 describes good through future-oriented language: whatever good we send ahead for our souls, we will find it with GOD.

This changes the way I see small righteous acts. An unnoticed kindness, a difficult truth spoken honestly, an injustice refused, or a gift made in secret does not simply vanish.

The verse ties present ethics to future reality.

Verse references: 2:110.

4. Consequences That Continue After Death

Verse

36:12 — We will certainly revive the dead, and we have recorded everything they have done in this life, as well as the consequences that continue after their death. Everything we have counted in a profound record.

Reflection on the Verse

36:12 speaks not only of what people did in life, but also of consequences that continue after death.

A word, a piece of knowledge taught, an injustice initiated, or a good structure established can continue producing effects. The verse does not explain every mechanism, so details should not be invented.

The important question becomes not only “What did I do today?” but “What did I set in motion today?”

Verse references: 36:12.

5. The Record Attached to the Neck and Reading It

Verse

17:13 — We have recorded the fate of every human being; it is tied to his neck. On the Day of Resurrection we will hand him a record that is accessible.

17:14 — Read your own record. Today, you suffice as your own reckoner.

Reflection on the Verse

17:13-14 makes the account deeply personal. Each person’s destiny is recorded, and the person is told to read his own record.

“You are sufficient as your own reckoner” leaves little room for self-deception. This complements the internal testimony explored in When the Mouth Is Sealed.

If I can learn to read myself honestly today, I may be preparing for that future reading. Reflection can become a practice of seeing before defending.

Verse references: 17:13; 17:14.

6. Nothing Small or Great Is Lost

Verse

18:49 — The record will be shown, and you will see the guilty fearful of its contents. They will say, “Woe to us. How come this book leaves nothing, small or large, without counting it?” They will find everything they had done brought forth. Your Lord is never unjust towards anyone.

Reflection on the Verse

The fear in 18:49 comes from a record that leaves nothing small or great uncounted. Something does not become unrecorded simply because I considered it insignificant.

The verse ends with an assurance of justice: the Lord is never unjust to anyone.

This produces both fear and security. Wrong is not lost, but neither is good.

Verse references: 18:49.

7. The Record Speaks the Truth About Us

Verse

45:28 — You will see every community kneeling. Every community will be called to view their record. Today, you get paid for everything you have done.

45:29 — This is our record; it utters the truth about you. We have been recording everything you did.

Reflection on the Verse

45:28-29 describes the record as speaking the truth about people. This suggests a difference can exist between the story a person tells about himself and the actual record.

I can describe myself as well-intentioned or justified. The record, however, is tied to what was actually done.

Truthfulness is therefore required not only toward others, but toward myself.

Verse references: 45:28; 45:29.

8. What We Advance, What We Delay, and Excuses

Verse

75:13 — The human being will be informed, on that day, of everything he did to advance himself, and everything he did to regress himself.

75:14 — The human being will be his own judge.

75:15 — No excuses will be accepted.

Reflection on the Verse

75:13-15 says that the human being will be informed of what he advanced and what he held back, that he will become his own judge, and that excuses will not be accepted.

Sometimes I do not commit an obvious wrong; I simply postpone the right thing—an apology, a debt, a right to return, or a truth to speak.

Preparing for tomorrow may therefore mean not only reducing wrong actions, but refusing to keep postponing right actions.

Verse references: 75:13; 75:14; 75:15.

9. Every Soul Will Know What It Advanced and Delayed

Verse

82:5 — Every soul will find out what caused it to advance, and what caused it to regress.

82:10 — Oblivious to the fact that there are (invisible) keepers around you.

82:11 — They are honest recorders.

82:12 — They record everything you do.

Reflection on the Verse

82:5 says that every soul will know what it advanced and what it delayed. 82:10-12 speaks of trustworthy recorders who record what we do.

A person may not immediately see the consequences of life. The long effect of a good deed or the future emptiness created by neglect may remain hidden.

Present convenience is therefore not enough as a criterion. “In which direction is this choice moving me?” is a deeper question.

Verse references: 82:5; 82:10; 82:11; 82:12.

10. An Atom’s Weight of Good and Evil

Verse

99:7 — Whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it.

99:8 — And whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it.

Reflection on the Verse

99:7-8 describes the precision of account through the smallest measure: an atom’s weight of good or evil will be seen.

“No one noticed” and “It was only a small thing” lose their authority as moral excuses. The same verses also prevent us from despising small good.

What is sent ahead for tomorrow does not always have to be dramatic. A life can be shaped through small acts of truthfulness.

Verse references: 99:7; 99:8.

11. The Human Being Is Responsible for His Own Works

Verse

53:39 — Every human being is responsible for his own works.

53:40 — And everyone’s works will be shown.

53:41 — Then they will be paid fully for such works.

Reflection on the Verse

53:39-41 personalizes responsibility: each person is responsible for his own works, those works will be shown, and recompense will be complete.

My family, community, leader, or friends cannot live in my place. I may learn from them, but my works remain mine.

This places religious authority in a healthy position: guidance can be received, but account cannot be delegated.

Verse references: 53:39; 53:40; 53:41.

12. Coming Face to Face with Good and Bad Deeds

Verse

3:30 — The day will come when each soul will find all the good works it had done brought forth. As for the evil works, it will wish that they were far, far removed. GOD alerts you that you shall reverence Him alone. GOD is Compassionate towards the people.

Reflection on the Verse

3:30 says that every soul will find its good deeds present before it, while wishing its evil deeds were far away.

It is easy to forget a wrong today. Time can cover shame and the self can construct a new story. The verse describes a day when deeds are brought forward again.

Preparing for the future means not hiding the wrong, but changing direction while change remains possible.

Verse references: 3:30.

13. The Precision of Account and GOD’s Justice

Verse

4:40 — GOD does not inflict an atom’s weight of injustice. On the contrary, He multiplies the reward manifold for the righteous work, and grants from Him a great recompense.

Reflection on the Verse

4:40 says that GOD does not commit even an atom’s weight of injustice and that He multiplies the reward for a righteous work.

The idea of account is therefore balanced by justice and generosity rather than reduced to naked fear.

This teaches me to think of Judgment not merely as fear of being caught, but as perfect justice in which neither goodness nor injustice disappears.

Verse references: 4:40.

14. No One Will Carry Another’s Burden

Verse

6:164 — Say, “Shall I seek other than GOD as a lord, when He is the Lord of all things? No soul benefits except from its own works, and none bears the burden of another. Ultimately, you return to your Lord, then He informs you regarding all your disputes.”

Reflection on the Verse

6:164 says that no soul benefits except from its own works and no one carries another’s burden.

Religious life can create comforting sentences such as “our scholars know,” “our community is correct,” or “my family lived this way,” but responsibility cannot be transferred.

The question of what I have sent ahead cannot be delegated. No one can practice righteousness, repent, or carry account in my place.

Verse references: 6:164.

15. Words Are Also Part of the Record

Verse

50:18 — Not an utterance does he utter without an alert witness.

Reflection on the Verse

50:18 says that not a single word is uttered without an alert witness. What we send ahead is not limited to physical action; speech also belongs to the record.

A sentence can repair or wound another person. A rumor can spread. A truthful statement can be remembered years later.

Truthful speech is therefore part of preparation for the future.

Verse references: 50:18.

16. The Future Between What I Say and What I Do

Verse

61:2 — O you who believe, why do you say what you do not do?

61:3 — Most abominable in the sight of GOD is that you say what you do not do.

Reflection on the Verse

61:2-3 asks why believers say what they do not do and describes that contradiction as deeply hateful in GOD’s sight.

A person may imagine that intentions and religious statements have been sent ahead, but the record concerns what is actually done. When “one day I will” continually replaces action, self-deception can begin.

Preparing for tomorrow means reducing the distance between what I say and what I do.

Verse references: 61:2; 61:3.

17. Reviewing My Own Record Today

Verse

59:18 — O you who believe, you shall reverence GOD, and let every soul examine what it has sent ahead for tomorrow. You shall reverence GOD; GOD is fully Cognizant of everything you do.

17:14 — Read your own record. Today, you suffice as your own reckoner.

Reflection on the Verse

59:18 says to examine, while 17:14 says, “Read your own record.” One is a command for the present; the other belongs to Resurrection.

Together they suggest a powerful spiritual practice: voluntary confrontation before unavoidable confrontation.

At the end of a day I can ask: What good did I send ahead? What wrong did I defend? Whom did I treat unjustly? What still needs correction?

Verse references: 59:18; 17:14.

18. The Unknown Tomorrow: The Boundary Between Preparation and Ownership

Verse

31:34 — With GOD is the knowledge regarding the Hour (end of the world).* He is the One who sends down the rain, and He knows the contents of the womb. No soul knows what will happen to it tomorrow, and no one knows in which land he or she will die. GOD is Omniscient, Cognizant.

Reflection on the Verse

59:18 calls every soul to examine what it has sent ahead “for tomorrow,” while 31:34 says that no soul knows what will happen to it tomorrow. Read together, the two verses draw a precise boundary around the future: a human being carries responsibility toward tomorrow without possessing tomorrow.

Planning is one thing; imagining that I rule the future is another. I can make a decision today, send a good deed ahead, repair a wrong, or keep a promise. Yet I do not know what tomorrow will bring, how long my life will continue, or in what land it will end. 31:34 places that unknown within GOD’s knowledge.

This does not reduce responsibility. It clarifies it. Instead of being consumed by the part of the future I cannot control, I can examine the speech and conduct entrusted to me today. The command in 59:18 to send something ahead is therefore not an attempt to seize destiny. It is a call to live rightly within the time entrusted to us.

I do not know tomorrow, but I can pay attention today to what I send toward it. In terms of monotheism, the distinction is profound: knowledge and sovereignty over the future belong to GOD; my moral responsibility for what I do now belongs to me.

Verse references: 59:18; 31:34.

19. Arabic Word Roots: Soul, Tomorrow, and Sending Ahead

Verse

59:18 — O you who believe, you shall reverence GOD, and let every soul examine what it has sent ahead for tomorrow. You shall reverence GOD; GOD is fully Cognizant of everything you do.

Reflection on the Verse

The word نَفْس (nafs) in 59:18 is connected with ن-ف-س (n-f-s) and belongs to the field of self, soul, or person. “Every soul” emphasizes personal responsibility.

قَدَّمَتْ (qaddamat) comes from ق-د-م (q-d-m), carrying the field of putting forward and sending ahead. The future is presented as a direction toward which something is already being sent.

غَدٍ (ghad) means “tomorrow.” وَلْتَنظُرْ (waltanzur) contains ن-ظ-ر (n-z-r), the field of looking, considering, and examining.

ٱتَّقُوا (ittaqu) is connected with و-ق-ي (w-q-y), carrying the field of guarding and protecting. Its repetition frames self-examination within accountability to GOD.

Verse references: 59:18.

Other Claims

Traditional interpretations offer different explanations of the record, the book, the recorders, and the language of “tomorrow.” Some treat the record as a literal metaphysical book or system, while others emphasize the complete disclosure of human deeds. The “tomorrow” of 59:18 is also commonly connected with the Hereafter.

It is not necessary to define mechanisms the verses do not explain. The main point is clearer: deeds are not lost, a person confronts his own actions, GOD does not commit even the smallest injustice, and responsibility is personal.

Conclusion

When I return to 59:18, “tomorrow” no longer feels like an abstract future. The verse brings the future into the present: let every soul examine what it has sent ahead.

2:110 says that good is sent ahead; 36:12 says deeds and continuing consequences are recorded; 17:13-14 says a person will read his own record; 18:49 says nothing small or great is left out; 45:29 says the record speaks the truth; and 99:7-8 says even an atom’s weight of good or evil will be seen. 4:40 balances the entire picture with GOD’s complete justice.

A practical conclusion follows: I build the future not only through plans, but through character. Every truthful sentence, every just decision, every delayed apology, every unverified claim, and every small good act forms a relationship with “tomorrow.”

Perhaps the most honest question at the end of a day is: What did I send ahead for tomorrow today?

And a second question: When what I sent returns to me tomorrow, will I want to see it?

GOD knows best.

Note

2:32 — They said, “Be You glorified, we have no knowledge, except that which You have taught us. You are the Omniscient, Most Wise.”

GOD knows best.
