Peace. Peace be upon you.

There are some verses that a person cannot simply read once and move past. Their words continue to circulate in the mind. With every return, they open another door and leave another question before us. For me, 3:18 is such a verse.

This verse does not merely declare the oneness of GOD. It speaks of testimony, knowledge, justice, power, and wisdom. Moreover, it connects all of them within a single sentence. The oneness of GOD is not left as a statement of belief; it is affirmed through testimony, upheld through justice, recognized through knowledge, and completed within power and wisdom.

At the beginning of the verse, GOD bears witness to His own oneness. Then the angels and those who possess knowledge join this testimony. It then declares that He is the absolute god, truthfully and equitably. At the end of the verse, the same truth is proclaimed once again: there is no god except Him.

It is clear that this repetition is not without purpose. The human mind is inclined to create partners, establish intermediaries, and elevate people and institutions beyond their proper place. For this reason, monotheism is not an idea to be stated once and then left behind. It is an awareness that must be remembered every day and rebuilt within the human being.

Those who harbor doubt in their hearts pursue the multiple-meaning verses in order to create confusion and extract a particular meaning. No one knows their correct meaning except GOD and those who are firmly grounded in knowledge. They say, “We believe in it—all of it comes from our Lord.” Only those who possess understanding will take heed.

GOD bearing witness to His own oneness shows that this truth does not depend on human acceptance. Even if all people were to say something else, there is no god except Him. Societies may exalt other beings, attribute sanctity to certain people, or make their traditions unquestionable. But none of these carries any weight before GOD’s testimony.

Here a person should ask himself a sincere question: Have the things I accept about GOD truly been shaped by the truth GOD has revealed, or by assumptions I inherited from my surroundings?

When a person says that there is no god except GOD, the natural consequence of that statement is submission. If one raises personal desire, social pressure, or the rulings of other people above what GOD has revealed, then the words spoken have not found their counterpart in life.

Bearing witness to the oneness of GOD is possible not by enlarging oneself, but by knowing one’s place. True submission does not diminish a person; it frees him from the burden of false greatness.

Verse 29:49 states that the revelations are clear in the chests of those who possess knowledge. The expression “in the chests” is especially thought-provoking. It is not enough for knowledge to exist only on the tongue or in memory. It must settle into the inner world.

Sometimes a person explains to others what he knows but does not apply it to his own life. He speaks of justice but acts unjustly. He speaks of monotheism but exalts people. He speaks of submission but retreats when the matter touches his own interests.

He first makes his decision, then searches for pieces that will support it. In that case, the verses no longer guide the person; the person begins directing the verses according to his own desire.

A person firmly grounded in knowledge is someone who can say, “All of it comes from our Lord,” before saying, “I know.”

When a person bears witness to the oneness of GOD, he also places his own life under that statement. He can no longer easily defend lying, injustice, display, or taking people as lords. The words he speaks begin to question his behavior.

Other Claims

Various interpretations have been put forward about 3:18 in different periods. In particular, different explanations have been offered regarding whom the expression “those who possess knowledge” includes, in what sense testimony is used, and the place of the expression of justice within the sentence.

Some approaches limit those who possess knowledge to a specific religious class. I believe this approach should be treated carefully. The verse itself presents people of knowledge not as an independent authority, but as those who bear witness to the oneness of GOD. Their value comes not from their titles, but from the harmony between their testimony and the truth.

Possessing knowledge does not give a person a separate authority beside GOD. On the contrary, it places that person under greater responsibility. The fact that 9:31 criticizes taking religious leaders and scholars as lords, while 3:18 counts people of knowledge among the witnesses, shows how important this distinction is.

Another approach is to read 3:18 merely as a theoretical statement declaring the principles of belief. Yet the direct presence of justice in the verse shows that monotheism cannot be considered separately from human conduct. Accepting the oneness of GOD changes a person’s understanding of justice, loyalties, and attitude toward authority.

The central thought emphasized in this article is this: 3:18 is not merely a verse that tells us who GOD is. It is also a mirror that measures a person’s knowledge, testimony, justice, and submission.

Perhaps the most important question a person should ask himself before this verse is:

What am I truly bearing witness to?

Not only with my words, but with my choices, my fears, my loyalties, and my actions, whom do I treat as absolute?

Bearing witness to the oneness of GOD is not merely saying, “There is no god except Him.” It is refusing to give any other being the place that belongs to GOD. It means not taking people as lords, not turning knowledge into a tool of arrogance, not abandoning justice for the sake of self-interest, and standing behind what one knows to be true.

The testimony of the angels is confirmed through obedience, the testimony of people of knowledge through recognizing the truth, and the testimony of the human being through the life he lives.

For this reason, 3:18 is not merely a sentence to be read. It is a measure that must be lived again every day.

Throughout life, a person says many things. But some statements encompass a person’s entire life. “There is no god except Him” is one of them.

When this statement truly settles into the heart, a person’s fears change, loyalties change, understanding of justice changes, and the place given to other people changes. A person no longer sees any power as absolute. He does not regard any person as beyond question. He does not alter the truth for the sake of any interest.

Because he knows that the greatest testimony is GOD’s testimony.

And He bears witness that there is no god except Him.
